Georgia VFW Legislative Priorities
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Georgia is committed to ensuring that the voices of our state’s service members, veterans, family members, and the surviving spouses and orphans of the fallen are heard at every level of government. Advocacy is central to our mission! From health care and earned benefits to education, employment, and survivor support, Georgia VFW works to protect and strengthen the policies that directly impact those who served and those who still sacrifice.
Building upon the member-driven National Legislative Priorities, our state-level priorities reflect additional real challenges veterans and their family members uniquely face in Georgia.
Georgia VFW serves as the united voice of veterans across all 159 counties across the great State of Georgia, working tirelessly to ensure state and federal lawmakers keep their promises to those who served.
Beyond shaping policy, our legislative priorities serve as a call to action for every veteran and supporter in Georgia. Advocacy is not confined to the halls of the Capitol; it begins at the grassroots level, where local Posts and community members engage with their elected officials. By uniting our voices, sharing our stories, and standing firm on the issues that matter most, we ensure lawmakers understand that supporting veterans is not optional! It is a sacred obligation. Together, we can influence legislation that honors service, strengthens families, and builds a better future for all who wore the uniform.
Our 2026 Priority Goals include:
To fully fund programs for Georgia veterans, service members, family members, and surviving spouses and orphans, the Georgia General Assembly MUST:
- FULLY fund the Georgia Department of Veterans Services.
- Never reduce one veteran's benefits to pay for another.
To ensure that all veterans, service members, family members, and surviving spouses and orphans have timely access to earned benefits, the United States Congress and the Georgia General Assembly MUST:
- Crack down on unaccredited claims consultants known as Claim Sharks.
- Restore ALL criminal enforcement mechanisms, including criminal penalties, for any unaccredited claims consultants and entities that charge veterans to help with their benefits claims.
To ensure that all veterans in the state who require specialized housing and related medical care that they need, the Georgia General Assembly MUST:
- Ensure that there are enough veterans homes in the State of Georgia to service the growing and aging veterans population within the state.
- Ensure that each state-run veterans home is fully funded.
- Ensure that each state-run veterans home is fully staffed.
- Ensure that the Georgia Department of Veterans Services has the perpetual resources for the growing number of service members needing care from state-run veterans homes.
To ensure Georgia retains and attracts military retirees and their family members, becomes more competitive with neighboring states, and strengthens communities statewide, the Georgia General Assembly MUST:
- Exempt ALL military retirement income from state income taxation.
To ensure that every VFW Post in the State of Georgia is best able to serve its community of veterans, service members, family members, and surviving spouses and orphans, the Georgia General Assembly MUST:
- Safeguard and expand legal revenue generation opportunities for VFW Posts.
- Support sustainable funding that allow for expanded grant and tax-incentive program access.
- Recognize nonprofit uniqueness.
- Protect veteran service organizations.
To ensure all veterans, service members, family members, and surviving spouses and orphans receive the support and earned benefits, VFW Department of Georgia fully prioritizes and supports the VFW National Priority Goals. Those can be found online at: vfw.org/advocacy/
