Athens Rock Lobsters Honor Veterans During Appreciation Game

The Athens Rock Lobsters honor veterans during a special Veterans Appreciation Game on November 8, 2025, recognizing the service, sacrifice, and continued leadership of those who served. The highlight of the evening came as U.S. Army veteran and four-time Purple Heart recipient SSG Herb Hood, a Vietnam War “Tunnel Rat,” former Drill Sergeant, and longtime VFW member, delivered the official lineup card.

Known for his courage, resilience, and mentorship of younger veterans, SSG Hood’s presence brought a powerful sense of pride to the arena. His reading of the lineup card served as a tribute not only to Vietnam veterans, but to all who have worn the uniform across generations.

In addition to honoring SSG Hood, the Rock Lobsters recognized several distinguished guests from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Military Order of the Cootie:

  • Georgia Grand Commander Justin Howe, Military Order of the Cootie
  • Commander Jeff Ventura, VFW Post 4346 (Toccoa)
  • Commander David Griffin, VFW Post 2872 (Athens)

These leaders were invited to the locker room before the game, where they met players, received special edition pucks, and were recognized for their commitment to serving veterans within their communities. Post Commanders Ventura and Griffin were each presented with custom jerseys to be displayed proudly at their respective Posts.

During the event, VFW members also assisted a Marine veteran in need, demonstrating the continued mission of the organization, veterans serving veterans, wherever and whenever support is required.

The Athens Rock Lobsters hockey organization expressed gratitude for the opportunity to spotlight local heroes and to celebrate the men and women who continue to uphold the spirit of service in Georgia. Their commitment to honoring veterans underscores the meaningful connection between community athletics and those who have defended the nation.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Georgia extends appreciation to the Athens Rock Lobsters for hosting this impactful evening and for their continued support of the veteran community.
