Some of them were teachers, police officers, firefighters, plumbers, and physicians. They were of every race, creed, and color. These heroes came from all walks of life and from every corner of our nation. They left behind family, friends, and dreams, choosing instead to defend the ideas we hold dear. On this solemn day, let us remember their sacrifice with gratitude and humility, and let us all acknowledge the profound grief of their families who have lost loved ones.
