Memorial Day - Remember and Honor graphic

Georgia VFW Commander’s 2025 Memorial Day Message

Today, we gather on this important, yet somber occasion to honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Memorial Day is a time for reflection, a time to pay tribute to these heroes who have laid down their lives to protect our freedoms and ensure our way of life. Their name etched in the annals of history represents a story of bravery, sacrifice, and love of country. We must remember and try to reflect on the lives they left behind. The next-door neighbors and the kids who lived down the block – they were high school quarterbacks, cheerleaders and, yes, even class clowns. Some of them were teachers, police officers, firefighters, plumbers, and physicians. They were of every race, creed, and color. These heroes came from all walks of life and from every corner of our nation. They left behind family, friends, and dreams, choosing instead to defend the ideas we hold dear. On this solemn day, let us remember their sacrifice with gratitude and humility, and let us all acknowledge the profound grief of their families who have lost loved ones.

Let us strive to build a nation worthy of their sacrifice – a nation where freedom, equality, and justice are not just words but the foundation of our society. In the words of President John F. Kennedy, “A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces, but also by the men it honors.” Today, we honor and remember our fallen heroes, and, in doing so, we reveal the strength, compassion, and unity that define us as a nation. Let us take this opportunity to support and care for our veterans and active-duty service members as they continue to stand watch, ensuring our safety and security. Their service and dedication deserve our utmost respect and appreciation.  Let us honor them through our actions, our dedication to our communities and our commitment to a better future. May we never forget the cost of our freedom, and may we always strive in a manner that honors the sacrifices of our fallen heroes.
