On May 2, 2026, the spirit of service and community was on full display in Augusta as veterans, volunteers, and local supporters gathered for the first annual Blue Goose BBQ event at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home.
Hosted with the support of local VFW Posts and dedicated volunteers, the event focused on a simple but meaningful mission, serving those who served.
Honoring Veterans Through Service
The Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home, a long-standing facility providing skilled nursing care to Georgia’s wartime veterans, serves as both a residence and a place of dignity for those who have worn the nation’s uniform.
During the event, State Sr Vice Commander Arnold Gonzales joined other VFW leaders to go up and meet the oldest veteran at the nursing home, 106-year-old Vivian “Vicki” McKnight. McKnight is a Navy Women Accepted Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) veteran is a World War II veteran, earning her a World War II Victory Medal and the American Area Campaign medal for her service.
Events like the Blue Goose BBQ play an important role in enhancing the quality of life for residents, many of whom benefit greatly from community interaction and recognition. Together with the Auxiliary, this inaugural event was a major success.
A Day of Food, Fellowship, and Gratitude
Plates piled high with barbecue, classic sides, and desserts were served with smiles and heartfelt conversations. As reported by local coverage, members of nearby VFW Posts spearheaded the effort, ensuring that every veteran in attendance was treated to a hot, freshly prepared meal. The atmosphere was relaxed and celebratory, with VFW and Auxiliary members taking time to sit, talk, and share stories with residents.
Beyond the food, the day was about connection, bridging generations of service members and reminding residents that their sacrifices are not forgotten.
Community Support in Action
The Blue Goose BBQ event reflects a broader tradition at state veteran homes in Georgia, where veteran organizations, civic groups, and community members regularly step forward to support the nursing home’s residents.
From donations to organized activities, these efforts reinforce a strong network of care around Georgia’s veterans.
Social media posts from attendees highlighted the joy of the day, smiling faces, shared laughter, and a sense of camaraderie that extended far beyond the meal itself. Volunteers described the experience as both humbling and rewarding, noting that even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact.
Looking Ahead
With the success of this inaugural event, VFW Department of Georgia expects the Blue Goose BBQ to be an annual tradition, one that continues to grow in participation and impact.
For the veterans at the Augusta War Veterans Nursing Home, the event was more than just a barbecue. It was a reminder that their service is remembered, their presence is valued, and their community stands firmly behind them.
